How To Cook Incredible Curry Just Like In India

Take an interactive class with friends and learn about Indian cuisine with Ginger & Lime

Don’t know your Indian from your Cape Malay curry? Cape Town-based Ginger & Lime’s interactive Indian cooking class will not only clear things up, it will also give you all the tools you need to make the most delicious Indian dishes, such as that most delicious of mouthfuls, the spicy samoosa, or an aubergine-and-tomato bake with curry leaves. Plus you’ll have loads of sociable fun with friends while you learn.

DON'T CURRY: HELP HAS ARRIVED
This is some of what you’ll learn: Indian curries often start and end with ghee, heavy cream, or yoghurt, which is meant to tamper down the heat. Curries come with a side of basmati rice. Cape Malay curries are made with coconut milk and often include chutney, creating a sweet taste. They're also not as red as Durban curries, which have extra chilli powder added. Thai curries use different coloured peppers, and as a result, come in red, green, and yellow. These curries are served with jasmin rice.

SO WHAT'S ON THE MENU?
A menu is issued to the trainee cooks on arrival. Besides samoosas and the bake, recipes include dahl (a soup made from dried pulses), slow-roast lamb with spinach and mint, and Goan fish curry. Class members are encouraged to participate fully in the cooking so that you return home confident in what you’ve learnt.

You’ll also learn to find your way around the spices used in Indian cooking: turmeric, fenugreek, cardamom, coriander, mustard seed, ginger, cinnamon, and a spice mix known as garam masala. It's important to note that the availability of ingredients plays a big role in the taste, as does variables such as soil type, climate, and culture.

INCREDIBLE INDIA WILL TAKE PLACE IN A BIGGER, BETTER KITCHEN
Incredible India is the latest instalment of Ginger & Lime’s interactive cooking classes. The company has also moved to a bigger, better location: the Kitchen Collective. State-of-the-art facilities. Friendly staff. Delicious wine. What else could you need for an evening of cooking with friends, old and new? The new location comes equipped with a kitchen befitting a master chef; it's big enough for everyone to move around and have fun. And if cooking isn't your thing, sit down at an intricately decorated dining table where you'll find an array of glasses and flower arrangements. Smoker? You don't have to go into the street: there's a courtyard inside the building dedicated to smoking. Worried about your car in the street? Don't! A security guard makes sure nothing funky happens while you're inside cooking away. Be sure to make the Kitchen Collective your next stop.

THE DETAILS
Your ticket includes all the ingredients used throughout the evening, basic wines, recipes, and gratuity. If you're not a fan of wine, bring along your own drinks – there's no corkage! Look out for Rosenberg House: it's your venue for the evening. For the Indian foodie, this is a can't-miss event for September.
