Remembering The Days Of Tuku
Zimbabweanborn Takura Terry pays tribute to his late countryman, the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi
Celebrate the life of the late Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi with up-and-coming musician Takura Terry at the Springfontein Wine Estate in Stanford. The event takes place on 28 December 2019 and includes an authentic Zimbabwean dish.
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TUKU
The prolific musician recorded 59 albums in his 42-year career, blending many different sounds to create his own genre known as Tuku Music. He sang in Shona, Ndebele and English, using his husky voice in tours around the world to share the message of segregation during the Rhodesian regime.
Mtukudzi passed away in January 2019 after a long battle with diabetes, just a couple of months before an anticipated headline show at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. In light of this several performers did a tribute show at the Jazz Fest to honour him.
On this trip down memory lane, the talented Takura Terry will embrace some of Mtukudzi’s most popular singles such as "Todii", "Shanda" and "Andinzwi".
Upon arrival, you’ll receive a welcome drink followed by a traditional Zimbabwean meal of rim fish stew, served with sadza (a maize meal dish) and muboora (a pumpkin leaf-based side).
The Springfontein Wine Farm was the realisation of a life-long dream held by founder Johst Weber. He bought the farm from an old farmer in 1995 and immediately earmarked a limestone ridge on the property for planting vines. In 1998 the first vines were planted on the farm and in 2005 the first vintage was made.
Although vines make up a minority of the 500ha farm, they are prolific; producing red wines such as cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, shiraz, pinotage and merlot as well as white wines like sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc, semillon and chardonnay.
