There's a small bistro hidden under the trees of the Hermanus Waterfront. You might just miss it among the crowds of visitors, locals walking their dogs, and kids playing on the stretch of green by the whale fountain. Look out for the bright green tables, likely laden with showstopper dishes like sushi calamari, ginger and date malva pudding and rice krispies milkshakes. It’s called Pear Tree.
True to its name, the outer walls are covered in greenery and the logo sits on a fake tree trunk. Image: Pear Tree
Pear Tree is at the end of the cobblestone pathway and spekboom plants (right next to the yellow Hermanus Waterfront frame).
The restaurant is loved for its fresh fish and seafood, with the showstopper dish being the sushi calamari, calamari tubes stuffed with sushi rice and salmon.
Pear Tree offers a remarkable range of curious and healthy dishes, all in a casual fine dining style. Image: Pear Tree
Another curious combination is the sticky rice balls served on a bed of chilli ragout. This, and the pink falafel tacos, is one of the many small plates that are perfect for sharing.
There's options for meat lovers too, like miso sirloin (made from traditional Japanese seasoning that's filled with tangy umami flavour) and a grilled chicken nacho burger. And the wild dagga kombucha cocktails are refreshing.
There are also local brews on tap, plus a selective gin, beer and wine list. Image: Pear Tree
Walker Beach is a stunning backdrop for the families that sit outside under the colourful umbrellas. In the evening, fairy lights hang from nearby trees and when the weekend comes, there’s live music.
Inside, the cosy bistro has ceilings with rustic hanging basket lights and colourful green booths. There’s a fireplace too, which with a glass of gluhwein in hand, is perfect for a chilly day.
Pear Tree’s seating options are great for a warm, summer’s day or a chilly, winter evening. Image: Pear Tree
Another reason why it’s a great hidden gem is its convenient location in South Africa’s whale watching capital, Hermanus.
If you visit Pear Tree during whale watching season (May to November), you might be lucky enough to spot one.
The sea view, unconventional dishes and kombucha cocktails are just a few of the many reasons why people keep coming to Pear Tree in Hermanus.
Hermanus has been recognized by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the 12 best whale watching destinations in the world. Image: Pear Tree
Pear Tree Bistro is open: Daily, 8am to 9pm
