The annual Cape Town International Kite Festival is back with a mix of virtual and in-person activities. There’ll be online kite-making workshops and discussions and, of course, the attention-grabbing, colour-bursts of kite displays between 2 and 31 October.

Head to Dolphin beach in Bloubergstrand or the Zandvlei Nature Reserve in Marina da Gama and spend your day marvelling at the array of colours decorating Cape Town’s sky. The annual Cape Town International Kite Festival is back with a mix of virtual and in-person activities.

The Cape Town International Kite Festival is the oldest kiting event in Africa, and focuses on mental health. This year, it’s a hybrid event – virtual and in-person – and focuses particularly on how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected people’s mental state.
Consider taking part in one of the online workshops, where visitors can learn how to make a kite, meet other kiters and Cape Mental Health volunteers. The physical kite displays will happen on World Mental Health Day (10 Oct) at Dolphin Beach and again at the Zandvlei Nature Reserve on 23 October.

This colourful festival comes at a perfect time, when warmer weather returns. It’s a lovely time to head to the beach and showcase your kite flying skills to the world.

Kite pilots can join other kite enthusiasts at two events for a “flash fly”. The organisers request that people participating wear green, make sure to keep a good social distance and show their support for mental health awareness.
No bookings just donations, the event is free.
Sign up for virtual kite-making workshops and join discussions on Cape Mental Health’s website.
