The V&A Waterfront comes alive over the festive season, and this year there’s even more to choose from. There’s the Summer Palace for kids to explore, live performances, workshops to help create the spectacular festive décor that the Waterfront is famous for, and even drive-in movies. These are just a few of the festive season activities you’ll find at the Waterfront over the holiday season. In line with the COVID-19 health and safety regulations, all visitors are reminded to wear face masks, use hand sanitizer and practice social distancing when visiting the precinct.
“This year the Waterfront is creating a sense of neighbourly belonging and shared thanksgiving, marking it with a symbolic African Tree of Hope as the centerpiece of its message,” says Tinyiko Mageza, Executive Manager for Marketing at the V&A Waterfront.
The Tree of Hope is a symbol of joy and outreach to the waterfront community who can look forward to a special ceremonial lighting of its lanterns.
Melela 4 Children brings the Summer Programme for kids to the V&A Waterfront, which can be found at Croquet Lawn (above the Ulundi Parking Garage) where there will be lawn games, a mini magic show, and a crafting workshop along with storytelling and readers’ corner. A safe fun interactive space for kids of all ages to participate and have fun. Dates are as follows: 12 – 13 and 19 - 20 December and again 2-3 January 2021 between 10am and 2pm.
“There’ll be live performers within the shopping centre,” says Mageza. “When you spot one, make sure to take a closer look because it might be someone you know – the performers will be chosen from the Cape Town community. It goes with our theme of supporting our community and providing income for those who have lost theirs during the pandemic," Mageza explains.
The V&A Waterfront’s Take the Stage series is returning, and will feature a range of musicians each at their own set location. In the mood for some relaxing jazz guitar? Take a stroll out to the NSRI Tree and catch Bradley Prince. Love Celtic folk? You’ll find Jenny and the Jameses with their harp, guitar, piano, violin, even a bouzouki, at the Clock Tower. So keep an eye out for the Take the Stage performances here.
The V&A Waterfront has partnered with Ster-Kinekor to bring a drive-in cinema which starts 27 November, with shows available from Thursday to Sunday. There is one show on Thursday and Friday with two shows day and night taking place on Saturday and Sunday. This way it’s safer for people to enjoy the movies while adhering to social distancing requirements. All bookings will be done via Quicket.
The Two Oceans Aquarium has extended its operating hours. From 17 December to 6 January, the aquarium will be open from 9am to 7pm. Take the kids to meet the sharks and giant sunfish, join the guides during feeding time, meet some penguins or catch a puppet show at the Children’s Play Centre. Plus the kids can get their faces painted for free over the festive season.
Rollercade is the first indoor roller skating amusement park in Cape Town which will provide a safe and friendly environment for the entire family to enjoy roller skating. Visitors can also play a game of pool or just sit back and enjoy the music. The Rollercade will be located at Battery Park which is in P3 (third floor parking), use the Alfred or Dock Road entrance. Call +27 72 064 3963, email rollecade@gmail.com or visit www.rollercade.co.za for more information.
