White Shark Diving Company’s Shark Breaching and Diving Combo Trip
See a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle with shark experts in Gansbaai
Imagine you’re on a boat out at sea. It’s dawn and the ocean around you is slowly waking up under orange-stained skies. The sea is still, almost glass-like. Then, with a force unmatched by any other creatures in the sea, a great white shark leaps out of the water, revealing its jaws and several rows of sharp, serrated, triangular teeth before crashing back into the sea in a frenzy of spray. This is just another day at the office for the folks at White Shark Diving Company (WSDC), based in Gansbaai.
It can become your day, too, if you take advantage of the company’s one of a kind breaching-and-diving combination trip.
SEE TWO SIDES OF THIS MAGNIFICENT PREDATOR
To actually witness a great white shark breach is a rare experience. Breaching is a hunting technique and shows off the cunning and smarts of this incredible hunter, as well as its raw power.
However, that’s just one side of the great white shark, known as one of the most fearsome in the world thanks to the movie Jaws. It’s also shy, elegant and inspiring in terms of its evolution, and you get to see this up close when in the water with a great white (safely behind a cage).
THE ACTION HAPPENS IN SHARK ALLEY, GANSBAAI
Breaching tours take place in a shallow strip of ocean between Dyer Island (a roughly 15-minute boat ride from the mainland) and neighbouring Geyser Rock, which has been dubbed “shark alley” thanks to the frequency of great white sharks in the channel. This is because the Gansbaai area is home to tens of thousands of Cape Fur Seals that offer nutritious, fatty meals for the hungry marine carnivores.
The cage dive takes place closer to Dyer Island. Each trip is limited to a maximum of 12 and a minimum of six passengers. The floating shark cage takes eight people at a time, which means you get as much shark-viewing time as possible. The boat spends about four-and-a-half hours out at sea.
BREACHING, BREAKFAST AND HOT DRINKS
The tour includes a light breakfast on arrival as well as an extremely knowledgeable crew who do safety and fuel checks well before you embark. Onboard divers can enjoy light refreshments as well as panoramic views from the viewing deck.
The exhilarating day ends back at the harbour with post-trip snacks, hot drinks and a viewing of the day’s bravado captured on DVD.
WSDC IS SERIOUS ABOUT ITS ETHICS
WSDC is the only dive company in Gansbaai to be certified by Greenline Responsible Tourism, which is operated by the Heritage Environmental Management Company. Plus it contributes to, and is involved in, various conservation and social responsibility initiatives, and also runs a volunteer programme.
