Cool taproom with R35 happy hour pints & R60 burger special
Burgers for just R60, craft beer tasting trays, R35 happy hour pints
Last updated: Tuesday, 10 February 2026
The younger sibling of the Woodstock Brewery beerhall is one of the cheapest places in Cape Town to get fantastic craft beer. The graffiti-covered space is known for its beer tastings, R60 burger specials, two big rugby screens, and its irreverent edge… also, chess.
CHILL TAPROOM & HANG OUT
The Woodstock Brewery taproom feels like a cross between a cool industrial loft and a dive bar. Large open windows look over the busy main road, while graffiti-covered walls match the quirky energy of Observatory.
On any given day, you might find students halfway through a round of pub-golf, locals getting a pint after work (or over lunch), or craft beer connoisseurs doing a beer tasting.
When there’s a rugby match, the energy shifts to the taproom’s two big screens, while on Wednesday nights, the space quietens down for chess night. This happens from 7pm to 9pm. Chessboards are provided, and if you play, you get a free 330ml beer with any gourmet burger.

TASTINGS & CHEAPEST BEERS IN OBZ
Born Slippy, the brewery’s lager, is the bestseller, as well as Moose Hammer, a fruity pale ale for those who like it rich. Californicator, a hoppy, dark IPA, is the go-to for the beer-nerds who enjoy its bold citrus notes and more complex flavour profile. Pints start from just R45 (R35 during happy hour), which is the most affordable craft beer on Lower Main Road.
If you want to explore the full range, the tasting tray is the way to go. You get 100ml of beer, and you can spread that across your tasting tray to sample just a few, or all nine core beers. You can also do craft beer tastings and brewery tours at Woodstock Brewery’s main beerhall.
Sometimes, the head brewer will release a three-keg small batch. These often bypass the main Woodstock Brewery beerhall entirely and you can only try them at the taproom (think brews inspired by mango daiquiri or tequila sours).

HAPPY HOUR & BURGER SPECIALS
Happy hour runs every day from 4pm to 6pm, when Born Slippy lager is R35, and the place fills up fast. The taproom also offers a R60 burger special every day (except Sunday), featuring a 100g beef or chicken burger.
Otherwise, the food menu has bar snacks (think jalapeño poppers and chicken strips), mains like ribs and wings, and a taproom platter, which is ideal for splitting with mates.
The Bavarian-style beerhall has a more extensive food menu, with curries, schnitzels, steak, fish and chips. These are on special daily at Woodstock Brewery’s beerhall.
