Meat appreciation platter at a bucket-list steakhouse
3 cuts selected by the chef, with bone marrow and garlic rolls
Last updated: 6 August 2024
You’re spoiled for choice when you visit Char’d Grill, one of Hermanus’s top steakhouses. There’s steaks like skirt, flank, hanger, flat iron, Denver, caveman, Tomahawk… cuts that you probably haven’t tried (or maybe even heard of), which is why the Char’d meat appreciation platter is the go-to for a steak lover or first-timer.
WET & DRY-AGED, ALL PREPPED IN-HOUSE
For meat lovers Char’d Grill is the ultimate experience. The meat is from Bovelder cows, which is “one of the best beef breeds in the country” according to Farmers Weekly.
And because all the meat is dry-aged in-house, in the glass room visible from every corner of the restaurant, it has a more concentrated, deeper flavour, as moisture and fat evaporate from the meat over time.
There’s also a butcher’s deli where you can buy rare cuts to take home. Image: Char’d Grill
WHY THE MEAT APPRECIATION PLATTER?nbsp;
It’s the easiest place to start if you’re unsure where to begin, or if you just want a bit of everything. The platter has rare cuts, common cuts and moreish sides.
It comes with three steaks and four sides (bone marrow, cheesy garlic rolls, onion rings and fries).
The three cuts are especially selected by the chef: One rare cut, like a caveman rib or skirt, and two more common cuts like sirloin or ribeye. You get both dry and wet-aged cuts, in case you prefer a milder flavour. Some South Africans aren’t used to the intense flavour of dry-aged meat.
The meat appreciation platter is great to share with friends over a glass of wine. Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
50+ WINES & MANY SIDES TO PAIR WITH
The platter can feed three to four people. If you’re still peckish (or visiting with a bigger group), there’s so many other sides to go with the platter. Like smokey chipotle corn ribs and marinara and blue cheese roasted cauliflower.
And there’s over 50 wines to pair it with. Dry-aged beef pairs best with full-bodied red wine, like Peacock Wild Ferment Merlot (with aromas of cassis and cedar wood, and flavours of dark juicy berries) and Springfield Whole Berry Cabernet Sauvignon (velvety mouthfeel with softer tannins).
There are loads of small plate options that you can order as extras with the platter. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
SOME OF THE BEST BURGERS
Along with the variety of steaks, Char’d has other inventive menu options.
The burgers are a must-try, like the smoked chipotle pork rib (with pulled pork, black beans, salsa and sriracha mayo) and skud jou brisket (beef patty topped with pulled brisket and blue cheese). There’s even a burger named after Cyril Ramaphosa (topped with a jalapeno popper, avo puree and mayo).
Plus, there are some sizzling vegan/vegetarian options. Read more about the food at Char’d Grill & Wine Bar.
