On the rolling hills of Durbanville, you’ll find a boutique winery with beautiful aged vineyards and low-yielding vines that, as wine fundis know, produce the best wines. This is Canto Wines, a perfect little oasis for our friends in the Northern suburbs, but it is well worth the drive for the rest of us. From its signature MCC and macaron pairing to a stunning picnic on the lawns, this wine farm has something to offer the whole family will enjoy.
Canto Wines also offers regular wine tastings without pairings. Image: Canto Wines
This is Canto’s most popular tasting. Four glasses of MCC are served, paired with four different flavours of decadent macarons. The fizz of the bubbles is enhanced by the macarons that melt in your mouth. Flavours range from hazelnut to Turkish delight, and these are paired either with an earthy Chardonnay MCC or a delicate Shiraz Rose MCC.
This tasting costs R115 per person and is served throughout the week. Image: Canto Wines
If you’re not a bubbles person, there are two other tasting options for you. For gin lovers, a refreshing Bellevue Kukumakranka gin is paired with four different tonic waters, and with dried fruits and rose leaves.
The tonic waters range from zesty lemon to blueberry tonic. Image: Canto Wines
Kids, designated drivers, pregnant women and tea-totallers also have an option: Refreshing artisan tonics are paired with four gourmet macarons.
The non-alcoholic tasting serves the same selection of tonic water as the gin tasting. Image: Canto Wines
If you go for a tasting, consider sticking around for a stunning picnic on the lawns. The options include a variety of cheeses, cold meats, condiments and gourmet marshmallows and macarons. Note: The picnics work on a first-come, first-serve basis – there are only 10 spots available – and require a minimum of R180 purchase from the deli – so rock up early with your picnic blanket and bring some outdoor games.
There are only 10 picnic spots available at a time, so plan your timing ahead. Image: Canto Wines
Tastings are available: Monday to Thursday, 11am - 5pm; Friday & Saturday, 10am - 8pm; Sunday, 11am - 6pm
Picnics are available: Saturday, 10am – 8pm; Sunday, 11am – 6pm
