Bertha Retreat is the vibrantly modern space that will re-energise – it’s a beautiful stay with fynbos gardens, cobblestone pathways, hiking trails, catered meals, and cosy cottages that look over the surrounding mountains. Good news, you pay what is within your means. Plus there’s a free night’s stay special if you book in July for stays until December 2024.

Bertha Spaces, a program of Bertha Foundation, is a network of spaces designed to foster collaboration and creativity between activists.
You feel this the moment you visit the retreat, which is on Boschendal wine farm. On the reception wall is a colourful mural that represents the names of those who helped build the retreat. The gardens showcase rich indigenous plants and there’s a fresh produce garden that feeds guests.

The two conference rooms are equipped with the latest technology and back-up generator power. The rooms can accommodate up to 80 guests.
Smaller teams can split up into breakaway rooms, ideal for discussions and brainstorming sessions. Larger teams can arrange for the room to be theatre-style, which is great for presentations or screenings.
If you’d like to get some work done independently, dedicated co-working spaces and each hot desk is equipped with a monitor and keypad.

The on-site cottages are bright and colourful, with wooden furniture and decorative artwork. There are three; two with five bedrooms (up to 10 people each) and one with seven bedrooms (14 people). All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms.
The cottages have an open-plan living area, fully equipped kitchen, and dining table. A spacious patio overlooks Drakenstein Mountain, fynbos gardens with potted succulents, and a massive herb garden, and cobblestone pathways.
There are also hiking and biking trails, and a huge boma where guests can gather to watch the sunset and sit around the firepit.
There’s also a huge sports field, perfect for lawn games and leisurely outdoor activities. Image: Bertha Retreat
To celebrate their first birthday, Bertha Retreat is offering guests a free night’s stay if they book three nights or more. The offer is valid from 1 June to 31 December 2024, as long as you book before 31 July 2024.
Only one promotion is allowed per group and 50% of the deposit must be paid to secure the booking.
Because of the retreat’s “rated-based pay,” guests pay according to their means and group size, promoting financial inclusivity and community empowerment.
To make a reservation, visit the Bertha Spaces website. Or you can email info@berthaspaces.org.
