Skirt, flank, hanger, flat iron, Denver, caveman, Tomahawk… Char’d Grill & Wine Bar has steak cuts that you probably haven’t tried (or maybe even heard of), either wet or dry-aged on site. The meat appreciation platter, which includes an array of unusual cuts and sides, is the go-to for a steak lover or first-timer.
Char’d Grill & Wine Bar can even tell you what breed you’re eating. A popular one is the Bovelder, but there is also Sussex, red Angus and Simmental, all prepared and dry-aged in-house in a glass room. The humidity is controlled old-fashioned style through Himalayan rock salt.
This gives the meat a more concentrated flavour, as moisture and fat evaporate from the meat over time. Char’d also does wet-aging, which results in a more tender and subtle-tasting steak.

The meat appreciation platter is designed for two, but is enough for three, thanks to the array of sides. You get bone marrow, snails, garlic bread, mac and cheese balls and onion rings.
The platter is the easiest place to start if you’re unsure where to begin, or if you just want a bit of everything.
It comes with three different cuts of steak (two wet-aged and one dry-aged) especially selected by the chef. There’s unusual cuts like flat iron, Denver, caveman, and Tomahawk.

The beer garden is a popular spot where you can eat your steak with an Old Harbour Lager on tap or a Newlands Spring beer tasting tray.
The wine list has 50+ labels, all of which spotlight boutique wineries like Hermanuspietersfontein (the Bloos rosé is the only South African rosé made from all five Bordeaux varietals) and Fryer’s Cove (flavours of lemon, nectarine and white peach dominate the chenin blanc).
And for an unconventional pairing with your meat, there’s gin, brandy, rum and tequila tastings at Char’d Grill, one of Hermanus’s best steakhouses.
