Float to happiness along a river in the Citrusdal valley

Wolfkop Weekender is a must on the Cape Town music festival calendar

Every year in January, a little patch of riverbank along the Olifants River in the Citrusdal valley comes to life with happy campers, music, dancing and a whole lot of lilos. Regulars at Wolfkop Weekender’s Lilo River Flow will already have their tickets – it’s the kind of experience that keeps people going back year after year. “They all feel like part of the family. People have forged lifelong friendships with us, marriages have begun...,” says event director Richard Marshall.

Here’s what you need to know so you can go grab tickets to this very special event on the annual festival calendar.

2 FESTIVAL WEEKENDS + A MIDWEEK RETREAT

The signature Wolfkop Weekender gathering is the Lilo River Flow camping (or glamping) and music festival weekend – two weekends, in fact: The first from 13 to 16 January and the second from 20 to 23 January.

In between the two weekends, from 16 to 19 January, there’s the Midweek Retreat, called Pasithea – four days of yoga, workshops, walks, talks and more. Make a 10-day holiday out of the event and go for both festival weekends, with some rest and relaxation at the retreat in between.

WHO’S PLAYING AT WOLFKOP WEEKENDER?

Eight international artists and more than 50 local music legends make up the 2023 Wolfkop Weekender line-up – which is described as “multi genre” by the organisers. “We like to tickle the ears during the day, and it's all for the feet after dark,” says event director and DJ, Richard Marshall.

Roman Flügel, one of the biggest names on Germany’s electronic music scene is the headliner for both weekends, and while the organisers agree it’s impossible to choose which acts to look out for, we think London-based South African, Esa Williams, will be one not to miss. See the full Lilo River Flow line-up on Wolfkop Weekender’s Facebook page.

It’s all happening at Wolfkop Camping Villages, 450 hectares of private land near Citrusdal, at the foothills of the Cederberg. Surrounded by mountains and the river, there are several camping areas for Wolfkop Weekender. There are bring-your-own camping options in the Golden Valley area, or comfy campsites and cosy tents already set up for you in the Lost Valley, Berry Fields, Middelpos and Noordhoek areas.

You can also stay at the Wolfkop Nature Reserve – it’s a bit further from the action, but there’ll be a shuttle bus running to the festival venue.
