Greyt Escape organiser Anneke Viljoen was inspired by the quietness, magical views and beautiful mountain bike trails in Greyton. “There is something special about Greyton that strikes you as you enter the village, and it holds much more than the ordinary.”
Discover Greyton over three days of phenomenal mountain biking on the world-class routes of Greyton and Genadendal from Saturday June 15 2019 to Monday 17 June 2019.
The Greyt Escape used to be a single day event, but it’s become so popular that for the past two years, it’s been running as a three-day stage event.
THE ROUTE
Flowing new single tracks have replaced the ordinary routes. Your entry fee includes land and nature reserve access permits. All three routes finish in Greyton village. Find out all the details of the route online.
MASSAGE THERAPY
The therapists at EPT Recovery are experts in sports recovery massages and will be there to provide their services. To be sure of getting a spot, you can book online.
ACCOMMODATION
June is a cold time of year, so camping is not advised. If you need a place to stay during The Greyt Escape weekend, guesthouse accommodation can be advised by Greyton Tourism. Parking is available at guesthouses.
LUNCH AND DINNER
The route includes water points with food and drinks, which are included in your entry fee. You may book your entry including lunches and/or dinners. Food is prepared by Oak & Vigne Cafe in Greyton. There are also plenty of small cafes and restaurants in Greyton to choose from.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
The Greyt Escape is categorised as a Mini Stage Race by Cycling South Africa (CSA). A Mini Stage Race is a stage event lasting a maximum of three days with distances less than 60km per day. This means that youths (15–16 years), juniors (17–18 years) and all riders 19 years and older may take part in this event, but sub-juniors (14 and younger) may not.
ATTENDING THE GREYT ESCAPE
Entries cost R2850–R3300 per person, and teams of two participants cost R5500–R6450 depending on whether only lunches or lunches and dinners are booked. A one-day entry excluding food goes for R400 per rider. The trail run costs R120 for 6km and R250 for 12km. You can select your entry and book online. For more information, please contact the organisers directly on anneke@overbergmtbevents.co.za or +27(0)842280414.
INCLUDED IN YOUR ENTRY
In addition to meals, nature reserve permits, water points and food (as specified in your booking) and majestic views of Greyton and Genadendal, you also get a goody bag and free daily bike washes (excluding Monday). There are cash prizes for individuals and teams; details will be announced closer to the time.
TRAIL RUN
If you prefer, you may opt for the 6km or 12km trail run to get a good idea of the lay of the land around Greyton; this might inspire your further explorations. The shorter route, predominantly on Jeep track, takes you around the village of Greyton with a hill to test your skills and endurance. On the longer route, you head out of town and up to the first of two viewpoints – a great spot for selfies. Test your technical skills downhill, cross the Gobos River and the village, and then head up Knietjieshoogte for the last downhill to the finish line.
