16 June is Youth Day in South Africa, a day commemorating the start of the Soweto Uprising in 1976. This year Youth Day falls on a Tuesday and is featuring a host of online events which everyone is welcome to join.
Between live-streaming Cape Town's finest DJs, joining a Youth Day seminar and singing along to freedom songs, your Youth Day will be packed with events you won't want to miss.
THE CAPE’S FINEST DJS ARE TAKING OVER SOCIAL MEDIA
To bring the Youth Day celebration to you, Y?GEN enterprise is teaming up with the Cape’s top DJs for a social media takeover. Expect a giant in-house collaboration from DJ Ready D, Kay Faith and NV Funk to Tiny T and many more. Plus, tune in to live acts from the likes of YoungstaCPT and The Muffin Man as well as KashCPT and Tembi Powers.

EXPLORE THE BASIC RIGHTS TO EDUCATION
On 15 June, education experts and activists will be speaking about the role society has in ensuring the right to basic education during Covid-19. Join former Gauteng MEC for Education Mary Metcalfe, Education Lawyer Nurina Ally, high-school student Yolanda Magugu and others as they discuss the unique challenges and opportunities educators face in this pandemic. JOIN THE CONVERSATION (EVENT POSTPONED)
South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis is hosting the first of five episodes kicking off his Conversation Series. In honour of Youth Day and for the young who lost their lives in the Soweto Uprising, Dyantyis will be playing all his songs of freedom, liberation and triumph. These songs will be chosen from The Mandisi Dyantyis catalogue as well as Dynantyis Umzabalazo songs so that you can sing along from home.

DO THE BLOOD DONOR BOOGIE
Anyone anywhere can join the Western Cape Blood Service boogie for Youth Day via TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. Here’s what you need to know: on Youth Day, round up your friends, or boogie on your own, to your favourite song. When you’re happy with your moves, tag the Western Cape Blood Service using @bloodybuddy and share the video with your mates to keep the challenge going.
