Support a host of local businesses and initiatives as they come together to raise awareness and R1 million for ocean-based projects during Wavescape 2019, which runs from 9 November to 9 December.
In 2018, the Wavescape Festival raised R782 000 through a whole host of activities that were supported by locals and tourists alike. This year, the organisers of this annual ocean awareness festival are hoping to top that and reach R1 million. All proceeds go to worthwhile charities like the NSRI, Shark Spotters, Ocean Pledge, and the 9 Miles Project.
There’s an even bigger line-up of activities this year, so show up en masse and help preserve and conserve South Africa’s magical marine life.
ARTBOARD EXHIBIT AND PINK BANANAS ON AUCTION
This year, singer/songwriter Arno Carstens will be creating art, not music, as he joins a line-up of artists participating in the annual Artboard Exhibition. The exhibition will take place at the Jack Black’s Taproom in Diep River, from 18 November to 27 November, with the final auction happening on the last evening at 7.30 pm.
A highlight of the auction will be a creative collaboration surfboard between Shaun Tomson, the 1977 Surfing World Champion, and artist Blessing Ngabane. The board will be a replica of Tomson’s famous pink banana, the board that won him the coveted Banzai Pipeline Masters in 1975. In previous years, these types of surfboards have sold for R102 000 to R105 000.
Other artists participating include Lionel Smit, Brett Murray, Karabo Poppy, Michael Chandler, Heath Nash, Grace Cross (winner of the Judy Steiner painting prize in 2010), Kate Arthur (winner of the Sanlam National Portrait Award in 2017), Paris-born Lucie de Moyencourt, and Londoner Jake Aikman. Expect to find anything from contemporary art to pop art, illustrations and sculptures.
Please note: if you’d like to participate in the auction but are unable to attend, please contact shani@wavescape.co.za or +27 (0)83 509 5106 to bid, via proxy, or over the phone.
