John Play at the Artscape
Explore the hidden world of sex workers through the eyes of a man seeking his lost love
Follow the journey of John, a complex and interesting character who makes sense of the world around him through the medium of maths, in this play’s run at the Artscape Theatre from Thursday, 21 until Saturday, 30 May 2015. John’s life changes after he falls in love and has his first sexual experience, one that haunts him and leads him into a world he never expected to encounter.
Through the course of the performance John begins to age and withdraw into himself, forgoing social interactions increasingly frequently as he finds the strain of human contact too intensive. During this time, he becomes further obsessed with his first love, and in turn retreats to the underworld of sex workers, seeking a replacement for the person who initially stole his heart. Thus, the viewer becomes immersed in the marginalised world of the sex worker alongside John, seeing through his eyes the humanity behind the flesh.
Controversial and smart, the play is contemporary, edgy and unafraid to tackle provocative subject matter. It has a 16 SNL age restriction, so it’s not suitable for the whole family.
