Beach-side eatery is perfect for kids, adults and dogs alike

The Waffle Shack at Milk on the Beach had our jaws on the floor from the moment we laid eyes on it. Located in a quiet town just outside of Hermanus, it truly encompasses that feeling of a never-ending summer with its bright colours, bold flavours and nostalgic energy. Here’s our top picks of what to try at the Waffle Shack.

BUILD YOUR OWN WAFFLE

For a small town waffle shack, there are some crazy flavours to choose from. The basic waffle with cream or ice cream is always a winner, but we recommend something more adventurous, like the BBQ chicken with pineapple and mustard or the waffle croissant – a sticky and chewy croissant made in a waffle press. Our top pick is the Cheesecake waffle, with blueberry and lemon undertones, topped with cheesecake filling and sweet vanilla ice-cream.

SHARE A DOG BOWL COCKTAIL

It’s like a fish bowl cocktail, but served in a dog bowl. This cheeky drink taps into the dog-friendly nature of the waffle shack, which has colourful portraits of bulldogs and pugs on the walls, as well as a witty and cheeky sign at the entrance warning that humans should be kept on a leash at all times. (Rumour has it someone even brought their pet sheep). The cocktail is big enough to share between 3 to 4 people.

GET A LOAD OF THESE DOGS

The Waffle Shack has four types of loaded hot dogs to choose from, each named after a breed of pooch. There’s the American Pitbull with a smoky barbeque Russian, the German’s Shepherd with frankfurter and sauerkraut, and our favourite, the Mexican Chihuahua, topped with salsa, jalapenos and crushed nachos. For non-meat eaters, the Vegan Boerie is a great alternative.

SIP ON POPCORN GIN AND TONIC

The popcorn G&T is surprisingly refreshing, not too sweet and not too bitter, with hints of popcorn hitting your pallet. It’s even topped with salted caramel popcorn, mimicking the feel of a kid’s milkshake (but for adults).
