The Grande Provence Gallery is getting ready to unveil an exhibition that showcases the essence of paint itself. ‘Painterly’, curated by Aidon Westcott, presents pieces in which oils have been smeared thickly onto canvas in their voluptuous, rich state. Unprocessed and fresh, the brush marks and unblended colours are the stars of these paintings by renowned South African artists. This approach is a creative departure from the traditional practice of creating a refined picture that seeks to hides the painting process, even though this process defines the final product. It’s best to head to the wine estate’s gallery in Franschhoek to experience it for yourself. The exhibition will be running from Saturday, 9 September until Saturday, 30 September 2017.
Aidon Westcott is an artist who primarily creates mixed media pieces, as well as an experienced curator. He does both independent work and work for galleries, and has worked for D-Street Gallery, Art in the Yard Gallery and Moor Gallery in the Cape Winelands. ‘Painterly’ is an exhibition he has put together independently. He has chosen artworks by a wide selection of fine artists, who have also been featured in other galleries’ exhibitions and have even been participants at famous annual art festivals such as Solo Studios in Riebeek-Kasteel, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, Wordfees in Stellenbosch and more. Grande Provence Estate’s gallery is the perfect venue for such a show, in its scenic setting in vineyard country.

It’s worth visiting the exhibition on opening day on the 9th, when Grande Provence will be treating guests to glasses of their own ‘Angel Tears’ wines. So called to pay homage to a legend of a wine so delectable that angels tasted it and wept, this is an extremely popular brand of Grande Provence’s. Fairly light and medium-bodied, and ranging from dry to semi-sweet, the various red, white and rosé wines in this collection are simply heavenly.
