"I don't tend to do what's already been done," says Riyana Bassier, founder of Picnic in the Park, a Muslim-owned picnic catering and interactive workshop company that is taking over Wynberg Park (and four others to come).
The Workshops-in-the-Park focus on kids (5 -15 years) spending an hour in the park enjoying the workshop of choice: from slime making, arts and crafts to food and yoga workshops. Book a one-hour time slot, and enjoy the outdoors with a fully-halaal picnic basket filled with goodies.

Organising a picnic basket for yourself or your family doesn’t need to be a schlep. “Often people don't know what to take on pic-nic, they pack too much and are expensive and wasteful,” says Riyana. So when she saw a gap in the market when visiting parks and realising "it's a hustle and bustle with families but there's nothing there, there's no refreshments”, Picnic in the Parks was established.

They are a mobile picnic basket delivery service, dropping off pre-ordered picnicbaskets at selected community parks that you book via their website. Currently, they are only delivering to Wynberg Park. However, four more parks around Cape Town will be available for their services. A basket collab initiative will be coming soon for local solo food artisans, showcasing their bite-size delicacies and highlighting their services.

Bring the kids to interactive workshops that run every Saturday (and Wednesdays soon) at Wynberg Park with five, 1-hour slots available from 10am to 5pm.
“The flagship workshop, Slime Making, is perfect for slime fanatics or beginners”, says Riyana. It’s hosted by Handeeworks, run by Hanaa Davids (just 14-years-old). Kids can let their creativity shine, while getting messy with gooey slime. You will be given all the tools and you can even pick your colours and add sparkles to create your own unique goop. Afterwards, you can take home a slime-making kit.
Wear clothes your kids (and parents) won’t mind getting messy. Disposable aprons will be given to each participant. Image: Picnic in the Park
Parents need to stay with their children throughout the experience, but you are welcome to enjoy the picnic basket goodies while the kids are at play. Everyone gets a fully stocked, well-balanced hamper with light snacks and treats to eat. There's secure parking near the park.

More workshops will be rolling out in the coming months (keep an eye out on their socials).
If being creative is your kid’s forte, they’ll love the Arts and Crafts Workshop. “Our sessions are fun, introductory, and an engaging hour of entering your creative side,” says Riyana. If your kids have a passion for cooking, or if you’d like to introduce them to the basics, the Food Workshops will be a great start. “It’s a fun way to start your kid off with the basic food and kitchen fundamentals,” says Riyane. They will go through kitchen safety rules while learning how to whip up fun kid-friendly meals enjoyed by the whole family.
There will be an introductory Yoga for Kids Workshop as a teaser for what you can expect if you sign up with the host. This is a great way to see if your child is interested in yoga and the benefits it offers.

“Picnic in the Park is all about supporting local businesses and the community”, says Riyana. Another fun initiative they are welcoming to support these smaller businesses is a Host-a-workshop. All arts and crafts and industry-related individuals can register their interest in hosting an introductory session in the form of four to eight days with them about their business.
