Wine tasting can be daunting: sitting at the end of the table, nose in your wine glass searching for that “oaky note” your waiter pointed out earlier. It’s unnerving especially because Cape Town is full of self-proclaimed sommeliers. Wine tasting should be enjoyed by everyone, from novice wine taster to “wine geek”, as Gabriëlskloof’s winemaker Peter-Allen puts it.
Whether amateur or expert, CapeTownMagazine.com readers can enjoy a 10% discount on any meal at Gabriëlskloof Wine Estate and a complimentary wine tasting of its Gabriëlskloof Range until the end of August.
The Gabriëlskloof Range offers an array of high-quality wines from a sauvignon blanc, crisp rosé and a fruity Chenin Blanc to a 2018 Syrah and the estate’s best selling Bordeaux style blend.
You can try the wines without guidance, although your waiter will happily walk you through each tasting. If you prefer the DIY option, start with the “most “famous” wine – “...our Gabriëlskloof Range Bordeaux style blend called simply “The Blend”. People can’t get enough of it,” says wine estate co-owner Nicolene Heyns Finlayson.
The Blend is a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The fruit is handpicked from the vineyards, and the whole bunch is then pressed (stems, seeds and all) and left to ferment and age in barrels and tanks. "It has a bit more structure, but it's still easy-drinking," says winemaker Peter-Allen.
Chef Frans Groenewald has taken the traditional Hawaiian poké bowl and infused it with some classic South African flavours to create his own karoo-style poké bowl. The Overberg poké bowl uses koring (wheat) instead of sushi rice, but it's still topped with all the trimmings, Nicolene says. This breakfast bowl comes with Norwegian salmon, edamame beans, avocado and pickled ginger with a light sesame dressing. It's then topped with a soft free-range poached egg.
Head’s up, chef Frans is adding a few new dishes, as well as some of his crowd favourites in April. You can expect braised skilpadjies (lambs liver) and the popular salt-and-pepper-crusted calamari for starters. For the mains, there’ll be locally sourced slow-roasted lamb shanks, line fish with a prawn breyani and a duck au vin, cooked in the popular Gabriëlskloof blend. For a sweet finish share a plate of the trio of South African flavoured ice creams or the signature apple pudding.
