Grab your popcorn and settle down at this unique Durbanville location for the 2016-2017 outdoor movie season

Looking for something to do with the entire family on a Tuesday night? Look no further, as The Galileo Open Air Cinema sets up its popular outdoor movie theatre at the breathtaking Hillcrest Quarry in Cape Town’s Durbanville every Tuesday evening during the summer months.

Each week from November 2016 to April 2017, cinephiles can pack the whole clan in the car with a bite to eat and head out to this scenic former excavation site in the Cape Winelands for a night of popcorn, picnics and cinema classics, sci-fi movies, rom-coms, dramas and many more.

The Tuesday movie evenings take place on the quarry’s main lawn area, with the big screen positioned close to the water’s edge.

If you’re pressed for time and can’t manage to secure some goodies for a picnic basket, don’t fret. The outdoor cinema area features a variety of gourmet food and drink vendors selling everything from sushi and pizza to burgers and popcorn. Do note that no alcohol will be allowed into the venue.

Doors open at 6pm and it’s best to get there early to secure the best vantage point and soak up the sunset at this spectacular venue. The films start after nightfall, between 7:45pm and 8:30pm. Chairs and backrests from home are not allowed into the movie area, but chairs and blankets are available for hire at the venue.

Tickets for the entire season are now on sale and can be purchased online via Thegalileo.co.za. Do note that if the show sells out online, no tickets will be available at the door. Space is limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Gift vouchers are also available via the site.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS FOR THE 2016-2017 GALILEO OPEN-AIR CINEMA AT HILLCREST QUARRY (TUESDAYS)

Since the event takes place outdoors at the mercy of Cape’s fickle weather, patrons are urged to dress appropriately and be prepared for all scenarios. The event will not be cancelled if there is only a light drizzle, but it will be called off should there be rain or very strong winds. In the case of adverse weather conditions, film-goers will be notified via email and sms about any changes to the programme if the show is cancelled before the doors open. Patrons can then request a refund. If the movie is cancelled after the doors open, you will recieve and email and sms the following working day allowing you to choose another movie on another date. Please note that there is a seven-day grace period for refund claims – if a claim is not made in after seven days, tickets will be forfeitedn and no refund will be given.
