The movies that come to define a generation, get one major thing right? Technology.
This is one of the reasons Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park was so epic, and why if you’re going to watch this summer’s culture-shifting movies like Wakanda Forever and the new Avatar: The Way of Water, (out 16 December 2022) you should make sure it’s at the new revamped IMAX cinema at the V&A Waterfront.

We haven’t been able to immerse ourselves in the movies “like in the old days” for a couple of years. It’s time to go out to the movies again, only make it better.
James Cameron's long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water is one of the most anticipated movies of the decade, and many are saying the way to watch it best is on IMAX.
We recommend the fully immersive experience at Ster Kinekor’s new and revamped flagship IMAX with laser theatre at the V&A Waterfront, and where one of our team got to enjoy the groundbreaking Wakanda Forever.
The new IMAX with laser is the first of its kind in Southern Africa. Increased resolution means images are sharper and brighter, with deeper contrasts, with the widest range of colors available to filmmakers. Every small detail, from Anegla Bassett’s (who plays queen Ramonda) headdress to the white funeral garb shimmers on screen.
The speakers of Next Generation IMAX Precision Sound deliver striking clarity and depth that evenly distributes audio throughout the theatre. The sound is impressive, you can feel queen Ramonda pulsating with grief, and when villain Namor whispers menacingly, it’s as if it’s coming over your own shoulder.
The overall effect is that the movie spreads to your visual periphery, taking you into the movie, giving the illusion of being able to touch the images or that you could enter into the screen.

The IMAX experience extends from the screen into the cinema itself. The V&A Waterfront IMAX is a custom-designed theatre with stadium seating for clear vantage points at every seat, as well as custom screens for the brightest images.
Though the rows of chairs can accommodate your whole crew or family, it also feels so intimate.
It’s conveniently simple to see the number of your seat as it’s set right on the hand rest; there’s one walk-way up to get to your seat, and enough space in between the seats, so you don’t need to shimmy out self-consciously when you need a toilet break (Wakanda and Avatar are both almost 3 hours long).
Epic movie experiences are best done with friends and family (great Christmas gift idea for the kids, by the way). You can bring a friend if you are one of the lucky ones to win 5 sets of 2 tickets (10 tickets in total) to watch Avatar at the new and revamped IMAX at the V&A Waterfront. The tickets include: 2x tickets; 2x Coke; 2x popcorn. The tickets are valued at R340 per set. 3D glasses come at your own cost.
