Things to do on Freedom Day in Cape Town

Free treasure hunt for kids, brunch with bottomless mimosas, and more

2025 marks 31 years of democracy, and we’ve rounded some of the ways you can spend Freedom Day. Like a free treasure hunt for kids at a heritage exhibition, 2-course brunch with bottomless mimosas, and more. 

FREE TREASURE HUNT FOR KIDS 

Long March to Freedom has 100 life-size statues of heroes from South Africa and abroad that tell an inspiring story of our fight for democracy. If you visit on Sunday or Monday (it costs R20 to enter), there’s a free treasure hunt for kids with chocolate prizes. 

Date: Sunday, 27 April and Monday, 28 April; 10am to 3pm
Cost: R20 for entry; R75 for entry and a guided tour

PARTY INTO FREEDOM DAY WITH CASSPER NYOVEST 

ComUnity is a youth-led festival focused on urban culture, with local music, fashion, and food. To celebrate Freedom Day, you can expect 12 hours of performances, pop-ups, and talks. The event spotlights cultural diversity and social justice through art and music. The lineup of performers include Cassper Nyovest, DJ Lloyd, Summer Heynes and more.

Date: Saturday, 26 April; 12pm to 12am

TRAIL RUN IN STELLENBOSCH  

TITAN Trail Run is a race through scenic routes in Stellenbosch. There’s 5km and 10km trails. All participants get live timing, free race photos, and a medal at the finish. After the run, you can stick around for food trucks, live music (Timothy De Monk will perform), and a recovery zone hosted by Movement Specialist, Rowen Brown.

2-COURSE BRUNCH WITH BOTTOMLESS MIMOSAS 

Masibuyel’Embo is a social brunch series where Chef Asi Ndamase and Athi the Chef set a menu around one ingredient. This Saturday you can join A Brunch of Thyme with a two-course brunch (and bottomless mimosas) that showcases African indigenous ingredients in contemporary dishes.

EVER HEARD OF KINTSUGI?

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold. This Asian deli teaches guests the philosophy and practice of this ancient art form. All materials are included except the broken ceramic (you can bring your own or purchase from their collection). Your ticket includes a dimsum brunch of dumplings, spring rolls and wontons.

WEEKLY CHESS ON THE BEACH

Every Sunday, Cape Chess Club takes over the sandpit at Seaweed and Salt and brings an afternoon of Chess on the Beach. It’s a digital detox, where you can play a variety of board games, including chess, and sip on drink specials.
